In 2019, I had a business idea for creating a First Nation-owned Beaver Mitts company. Originally in May 2019, I submitted this business idea and did my second business idea pitch to a Startup Canada event held in Edmonton, AB.
I did not advance in the competition but I continued to learn and have gotten better at "acting on my ideas". Currently, Beaver Mitts are mainly worn by members of the Indigenous community. The traditional practice of tanned smoked hide, modern warm liner, beaver pelt and bead-work make the the Beaver Mitts an artistic warm accessory for the Canadian winter cold weather. I believe there is a market for domestic and international clients to purchase a custom pair of beaver mitts with custom bead-work.

About Me

My Background

Nehiyaw Cree from the Flying Dust First Nation located in northwest Saskatchewan.

My Hobbies

I'm really passionate about Nehiyaw culture, history and innovative new concepts to teach virtually across Canada.

My Favorite Things

I love to be outside on the land, fishing, hunting, ATV rides and working on DIY projects. I also like to be creative and produce YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram content. Lastly I like to play hockey, golf and fastball and to read hard copy books, (its too hard to read large documents on a screen).

Education

Master Student - Public Policy

Third Year Master Student

Program: Joint Masters Degree in Governance and Entrepreneurship in Northern and Indigenous Areas (GENI).

University of Saskatchewan -  Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy.

University of Tromsø.

This program offers a wide range of required classes and electives that provide you with a well rounded education for policy and economic development in the circumpolar north.

My favorite classes of the program include:

1. Policy development - Usask

This class offers a practical "hands on" online learning modules that require you to develop and submit real life policy recommendations. I got the opportunity to write a policy paper based on my real job with MLTC recreation Wellness and the MLTC youth survey.

2. Northern Innovation - this was my favorite class of the GENI program. In this class we had a weekly topic that we had to prepare and read the documents provided. At the end of the week ok Fridays we had to submit a blog to the class for the issues related to innovation in the north and best practices. This class really got me thinking and brainstorming multiple ideas for practical applications in northern Saskatchewan.
